How I got here:

From Physics Degree to Data Analyst (With Some Detours)

Early 2021

Graduation and First ‘Real’ Job

In early 2021 I was approaching my graduation from CU Boulder; set for May 6th. I had nearly graduated the semester before but being just three upper level physics credits short I was stuck staying through the Spring semester.

I elected to take Plasma Physics to finish out my requirements and added several non-degree courses that sounded interesting to round out my schedule. This meant my final semester would be relatively light, with really only the Plasma Physics final to worry about. I was working part time for the college IT department but this would end with graduation so I put the free time from my minimal course load towards finding my next job.

My job search was fairly directionless. I knew I wanted to use the skills and knowledge I was getting from my degree as much as possible and I also knew that I wanted to start working in industry rather than academia, but not much else. Mechanical and Electrical Engineering had always interested me and I had plenty of knowledge that would be useful in either field but I'd also started learning a lot about Data Analysis in my course work and found the process of organizing and finding meaning in data rewarding. Split between my interests, all three fields seemed like promising areas for me to start a career in.

I decided to just apply to jobs in all three fields. It's debatable if this was the best approach but that's how I went about it and eventually I started getting responses. I had several phone interviews and two of them progressed to in person interviews before I received my first job offer; which I accepted.

A First Job, Second and Third Job

My position would be as a Sales Applications Engineer for a centrifugal pump manufacturer rep in the Denver area. My initial responsibilities would include; reviewing new construction project documents for items we would be able to supply, performing engineering selections for the items, and generating accurate quotations for those same items. The items that we’d quote were typically full, custom-engineered, submersible commercial pump systems ranging anywhere from $500 to >$100,000 per package so accuracy and attention to detail were vital.

I quickly became proficient in these core responsibilities and started proactively searching out new ways to contribute. My initial extra-curricular efforts included documenting/ formalizing existing company practices and creating new tools/ processes for common team work flows. I drafted an inside sales handbook outlining company SOPs, remade the teams excel based quote generation tools and built an inventory management system for the companies warehouse using its existing Microsoft PowerApps license.

I was sure not to let these extra-curricular endeavors impact my core responsibilities though and was pleased to hear several customers had actually spoken well of me to the owner during this time; saying they appreciated the promptness of our responses since I had started handing their accounts. Near the end of my first year I was promoted to Inside Sales Manager.

As the Inside Sales Manager my responsibilities stayed largely the same with the addition of hiring, training and oversight of new Inside Sales people. Then about 6 month later I transitioned to a Project Manager to help the companies service team on the administrative side. As the Project Manager I took on more customer facing and logistic responsibilities; performing job walks to assemble Bill-of-Materials and coordinating between the Service Team, Outside Sales Team and our Customers to ensure jobs could be completed within budget and on schedule while still meeting or exceeding the customers expectations. This was interesting work but as I settled into it I started to feel hampered by a lack of existing records and process documentation.

If our team was working on a system they'd serviced in the past, I wanted to be able to give them records of whatever had found before. If jobs including specific services were routinely going over budget, I'd want to be able to show the Inside Sales Team so quoting practices could be adjusted. And when customer called-in for information about work that was done in the past, or about systems we had provided in the past, I wanted our team to be able to get them quick and accurate information. This is what got me interested in Business Intelligence systems, process improvement, and data analysis.

Deciding to Transition into Data Analytics

In my free time I started researching solutions; looking at CRM and ERP options like SalesForce, Monday.com, Bitrix24, Oracle, Sage, and Microsoft Dynamics 265 Business Central. I watched videos and used free trials and started to get familiar with the similarities and differences between various options. As I did this research I was also think about how the company would migrate their existing file systems into one of these options; the issues that we'd run into because of how the data was currently stored and where these issues would be best addressed by reorganizing the data vs. curtailing the solutions we looked at to those that would interface more seamlessly.

I started to recognize that both CRM's and ERP's are typically just relational databases with very well developed front ends for creating, reading, updating and deleting information; visualizing information, and automating data entry. Most solutions certainly come with some other features unrelated to a central relational database, but for the vast majority of CRM and ERP functions everything comes down to creating, reading, updating and deleting information into a relational database.

Eventually I decided that I wanted to work with these systems.
Enabling companies to work efficiently, and helping to create sustainable/ repeatable processes. establishing a foundation for growth.

Deciding to Resign

It was now early 2023. I planned to continue developing my skills in Data Analysis/ Business Analysis using my free time. Eventually I'd then propose a formal change in my responsibilities to management. I hoped to select a CRM and ERP solution, propose those solutions to the companies upper management, and put myself forward to lead the migration the new systems.

Unfortunately several major events made me rethink my plan and eventually decide to step down and look for other work.

First, the company was sold unexpectedly. The purchasing company was owned by our primary manufacturer so very little changed about our processes, but it was completely out of the blue and about two months later the team experienced a tragic loss with the equally unexpected passing of a key colleague. About two months after that the branches General Manager stepped down without notice followed quickly by the former owner fully stepped away from operations and another of my colleagues resigning without notice.

This all happened in less then a 6 month period and as the company had always been relatively small, we would now often only have 3-5 people in office on any given day. In the midst of all this I realized that the company would not be in a position to support my transitioning roles for quite some time; so I handed in my two weeks notice in the late August of 2023, officially stepping down on October 6th, 2023.

I learned a lot from my positions with this employer and am grateful for all the opportunities I was given.
I learned that I want to enable companies to grow; and I got to see first hand the tremendous potential some companies can have while just waiting for the right tools to free them up. I want to give companies those tools so that they can flourish; and so that I can flourish with them.

Transitioning to Data Analysis

Resigning without a new position lined up is never what someone plans for. I'd already started developing the skills I'd need to transition to Data Analysis and had been pleased to find that a fair bit of what I'd learned in college Python and Stats classes was easily applicable. Once I made the decision to step down my studying only increased and I started applying to relevant positions.

That takes us to today; I'm currently enrolled in multiple Data Analysis Certification courses and am actively seeking work in the field of Data Analysis. I'll be posting projects that I complete here to show my skill development and invite anyone interested to take a look. These projects can be found in the Portfolio section of this website.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a bit about me; please let me know if you have any questions or if you'd like to work together.
